Speaking Assessment (Spreken) 2025: Strategies, Duration, and Evaluation

An in-depth overview of the Spreken assessment for A2, B1, and B2 proficiency levels. Discover the types of questions, how to organize your responses, and advice for effectively communicating with a computer.

The Spreken assessment is frequently the most challenging segment of the integration process. It evaluates your capability to communicate in Dutch clearly and understandably, a crucial skill whether you're meeting an integration requirement or seeking citizenship.

Exam Setup: Interacting with a Computer

You'll be positioned in a booth with a computer, equipped with a headset and microphone. Questions and video clips will be displayed on the screen, and you'll need to speak your responses into the microphone. A tone will indicate when to begin and stop speaking. There is no live interviewer present.

Exam Structures: A2 vs. B1/B2

  • A2 Format (35 minutes): Features brief answer questions based on video content and scenarios where you describe situations.
  • B1/B2 Formats (approximately 30 minutes): This version is more organized, including brief, moderate, and extended speaking tasks. You may be required to express an opinion, summarize data, or propose a solution to an issue.

Typical Question Categories

  • Brief Response (20 seconds): Answer a straightforward question, often related to an image or short scenario. (e.g., 'What is the man doing?')
  • Moderate Response (30 seconds): Provide a more comprehensive answer, such as explaining a decision or offering advice. (e.g., 'Your friend wants to purchase a bike. What should she consider?')
  • Extended Response (2 minutes): (Primarily B2 level) Offers preparation time to develop a detailed argument or description on a specific subject.

Recommendations for Achieving a High Score

  • Articulate clearly and maintain a natural pace. Avoid rushing.
  • Utilize the full time given for your response. If you conclude early, elaborate further or provide an example.
  • Organize your answers. For lengthier responses, begin with a main point, add justification, and conclude.
  • Practice speaking aloud, even by yourself. Record your responses and review them for clarity and grammatical accuracy.
