A Comprehensive Guide to Dutch Integration Assessments

An insightful breakdown of the various exams within the Dutch integration system, featuring language evaluations, KNM, ONA, MAP, and PVT.

The Dutch integration procedure includes a series of tests aimed at evaluating your proficiency in the Dutch language and your understanding of Dutch culture. The exams you are required to take differ based on whether you are subject to the 2013 or 2021 Integration Legislation. Below is an overview of each exam component.

Essential Language Assessments

These examinations evaluate your functional Dutch language abilities and are usually conducted on a computer at a DUO service center.

  • Reading (Lezen): You will read brief texts on a computer and respond to multiple-choice questions about them.
  • Listening (Luisteren): This test involves viewing short videos and listening to audio recordings, followed by multiple-choice questions.
  • Writing (Schrijven): You will perform writing assignments, such as completing a form, drafting a brief email, or finishing sentences. The A2 level test is generally done using pen and paper.
  • Speaking (Spreken): You will speak into a microphone to answer questions and describe images displayed on your computer.

Exams on Knowledge & Participation

In addition to language proficiency, you must show your knowledge of Dutch society and your preparedness for entering the job market.

  • Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM): A computer-based test with questions on significant topics in the Netherlands, including employment, education, housing, and healthcare.
  • Participation Declaration Trajectory (PVT): A compulsory element for everyone, this course is facilitated by your local municipality. It covers fundamental Dutch values and concludes with signing a declaration to uphold these values.
  • ONA vs. MAP: Your labor market test is determined by the applicable legislation.
  • ONA (Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market): Relevant for those under the 2013 Law. It requires assembling a portfolio with proof of your job search activities and career objectives, culminating in a final interview (or a 64-hour course completion).
  • MAP (Module Labour Market and Participation): Applicable to those under the 2021 Law. This is a more practical, hands-on module overseen by the municipality to equip you for employment in the Netherlands.

Deciding Which Exams to Undertake

  • If governed by the 2013 Law: You need to succeed in all four language exams at the A2 level, as well as KNM, ONA, and the PVT.
  • If governed by the 2021 Law: Your Personal Integration Plan (PIP) from the municipality will outline the exams you must take. Generally, this means passing the four language exams at the B1 level, along with KNM, MAP, and the PVT.
