Understanding MAP & ONA: A Comprehensive Guide to Work & Participation Modules
An insightful overview of the Dutch employment market modules. Discover the distinction between ONA (for the 2013 Act) and MAP (for the 2021 Act) and determine which module applies to you.
A crucial aspect of your integration process is proving your knowledge of the Dutch labour market. Depending on the integration legislation relevant to you, you'll need to complete either the ONA or MAP module. This guide provides an explanation for both.
ONA (Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market)
Who is it for? Individuals who began their integration requirement under the Wet inburgering 2013. It is also available for voluntary integrators aiming for citizenship.
ONA involves a portfolio-based evaluation where you must demonstrate your exploration of career opportunities within the Netherlands. It comprises two components:
- The Portfolio: You are required to fill out 8 'resultaatkaarten' (result cards) that document your job search endeavors. This involves identifying potential careers, examining job listings, outlining your skills, and crafting a resume.
- The Final Step: Once your portfolio is sanctioned (€40 fee), you must either complete a 64-hour ONA course at an accredited institution OR participate in a concluding 30-minute interview with DUO to discuss your portfolio.
MAP (Labour Market and Participation Module)
Who is it for? Individuals governed by the Wet inburgering 2021.
MAP is a more hands-on and integrated module facilitated by your local municipality. It is not a DUO examination. Instead, it's an experiential process that is part of your Personal Integration Plan (PIP).
- Practical Experience: MAP emphasizes acquiring tangible experience. This may include volunteer work, a brief internship, or workshops on Dutch workplace culture and job application procedures.
- Guidance from the Municipality: Your municipal contact will steer you through the MAP obligations, tailored to your capabilities and the local employment market.
- No Separate Exam: You 'complete' MAP by meeting the criteria outlined in your PIP. There is no final examination or DUO interview.
