Option 1: Commitment-Based Exemption (For Pre-2022 Obligations)
If your integration responsibility began before January 1, 2022, you might qualify for an 'ontheffing wegens aantoonbaar geleverde inspanningen'—an exemption for demonstrable efforts. You must satisfy specific criteria:
- 600+ Course Hours: Attendance of at least 600 hours at an integration course with a 'Blik op Werk' accredited institution is required.
- Multiple Attempts: You need to have tried each necessary exam component at least three times.
Upon meeting these requirements, you may submit a waiver application to DUO. If approved, your integration obligation will be deemed fulfilled.
Option 2: Modifying Your Approach (For Post-2021 Obligations)
For those whose duties began on or after January 1, 2022, the procedure differs. There is no automatic waiver for course hours and attempts. Instead, you should:
- Reach Out to Your Municipality: Promptly engage with your contact at the 'gemeente'.
- Evaluate Your PIP: They'll discuss your current progress and challenges, with the power to modify your Personal Integration Plan (PIP).

Regardless of the applicable Act, failing exams consumes crucial time. If you're nearing the three-year deadline, always seek an extension. Demonstrating active attempts to pass, even amidst failures, can bolster your case for more time and help prevent penalties.
